Clean Water

Tom&Megan Mantas

As human beings we hold an obligation to be good people. Each person has a different variation of what it means to be good and what one must do to live up to that definition. Although these interpretations may differ, one can conclude to be good one must think of other humans and their basic need for survival. Each life should have access to food, clean water, and shelter. Those ingredients to a life are fundamentals to living and breathing each day. There are other qualities of life to argue for human kind; if the core qualities are not addressed first, advocates for other issues are debating for pointless reasons. There will not be a population to help if they are not alive. My purpose is to ask for each reader to read this and give enormous consideration to this real world problem.

Around the world, 780 million people lack access to clean water; that is more than double that United States population. Over 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Almost all these deaths occur in developing countries. Every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. This crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns. The majority affected by illness is caused by fecal matter. In addition to the death rates, women and children bear the primary responsibility for water collection in the majority of households; women and child spend countless hours gathering water and children often miss school. These numbers and facts are heart-wrenching; the good news is there is something we can do to help.

For every $25 that we raise, Water.org can give someone access to safe water for life. Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org has been helping people develop sustainable solutions for more than 20 years. Together, we can change lives with safe water.
