Hydrocodone is a prescription opioid medication used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, altering the perception of pain and emotional response to it.
Often combined with other pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, hydrocodone is commonly found in medications such as Vicodin, Norco, or Lortab. While effective for pain management, it carries a high risk of dependence, tolerance, and addiction, especially with prolonged use.
Because of its potential for abuse and serious side effects—such as respiratory depression, drowsiness, and constipation—hydrocodone is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States and is typically prescribed with caution.
