Valium, also known by its generic name diazepam, is a medication that belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. It is primarily used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures, and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Valium works by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which has a calming effect on the nervous system.
Because of its sedative and relaxing properties, Valium is also sometimes used before medical procedures to relieve anxiety.
While effective, Valium can be habit-forming if used for extended periods or in high doses, and it should be taken only under medical supervision to avoid dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms.
