Fioricet is a prescription medication commonly used to treat tension headaches and, in some cases, migraines. It is a combination drug that contains three active ingredients: butalbital, a barbiturate that helps relax muscle contractions involved in tension headaches; acetaminophen, a pain reliever and fever reducer; and caffeine, a stimulant that enhances the effectiveness of pain relief by improving blood flow.
Fioricet works by addressing both the muscle tension and pain associated with certain types of headaches, but it is generally not considered a first-line treatment due to its potential for dependency and side effects.
Because butalbital is a sedative, prolonged or excessive use can lead to tolerance, dependence, or withdrawal symptoms, so the medication is usually prescribed for short-term use under close medical supervision.
